1. Handstyles

Handstyles are artistically done graffiti tags. I usually start to create my graffiti sketches by drawing the word I want to write as a handstyle. This gives me hints for connecting the letters and the general composition of the graffiti piece. Thus, I still got enough of steps to rearrange the letters.

2. Graffiti Sketches

Graffiti Sketching is the way to learn to create awesome graffiti, to improve in skill and to develop your own artistic style. You will have to learn how to draw different graffiti styles, proper composition, three-dimensional blocks and how to combine colors. After mastering graffiti sketching you can move on to artistic spraying and street art.

In this part of the article I will show my graffiti drawings, the graffiti drawing process and the materials I use.

2.1 Graffiti drawing process

Follow the steps shown in the slides to draw the graffiti shown above.

Step 1: draw basic letters with a pencil

Step 2: add blocks to the lines of the letter. The same as it is done with graffiti bubble letters. Throwup-graffiti have sharp edges though.

Step 5: Remove unnecessary lines and trace the outlines with a thin black marker

Add the coloring to the throwup sketch
Step 7: Add the coloring: Use a gradient for the fill-in. It does not have to be fading.

Finished throwup graffiti sketch
Step 8: Add the background (drips, bubbles, splashes), highlights, year of creation & your tag. The highlights are added with a white acylic marker on top of the coloring. Alocohol-based markers are used for the background.
